Anniversary of Cameron 'hate' claim

IT'S nearly the ten year anniversary of a memorable political story: the day David Cameron was caught on a microphone saying Yorkshire people "hate each other".

Ahead of a speech in Leeds in September 2015, the then-Tory Prime Minister said: "We just thought people in Yorkshire hated everyone else, we didn't realise they hated each other so much." During the ensuing row, some Yorkshire politicians professed outrage while others conceded there was some truth in the jokey remarks.

At the time, the exact shape of devolution in Yorkshire (and much of the North) was very much up for grabs. Should there be a 'One Yorkshire' or 'Greater Yorkshire' mayor, or should power be divided up across smaller regions in God's Own Country? A decade later, things seem a lot more settled, even if it has taken a succession of rows between Yorkshire's local leaders and various national governments to get here.
