Data shows youngsters looking after older relatives across the city

- By DAVID HUMPHREYS Local Democracy Reporter

CHILDREN as young as nine years old are acting as carers for older relatives across Liverpool, according to new data.

Almost 200 people up to the age of 25 throughout the city are in an unpaid caring position, providing support to a family member, friend or neighbour who is disabled, has an illness or long-term condition, or who needs help due to getting older or for other needs, such as mental health and addiction.

A report by the city council's children and young people's scrutiny committee found that in the city as a whole, there are currently around 7,745 known carers of all ages. Of those, more than 2.5% are considered to be aged 25 or under.
