Two prison inmates die at city prisons in two weeks

TWO people have died within the space of two weeks at Liverpool prisons, with two separate investigations under way. Philip Pope died while in custody at HMP Altcourse on August 28 this year.

Less than two weeks later, Carl Mason died while in custody at HMP Liverpool on September 10. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) has launched investigations into both of the men’s deaths.

Following the death of a prisoner while in custody, or within two weeks of leaving prison, the PPO will conduct an independent investigation into the death to establish the cause and events that surrounded the death.
