FAMILY BEHIND MAGGIE MAYS SAY THEIR MUCH-LOVED CITY CENTRE CAFE IS TO CLOSE IN DECEMBER AFTER 30 YEARS

- By DANNY GUTMANN

If you've ever asked for recommendations on where to get the best bowl of Scouse, the chances are that you've quickly been pointed in the direction of Maggie Mays cafe on Bold Street.

Opening their doors for the first time on a cold Monday morning in 1995, the Lea family could hardly believe what they were witnessing after waves of customers made their way into the cafe for the first time.

However, after 30 years of serving up their famous Scouse, the family have made the difficult decision to close the cafe next month.

Carly Lea, 52, who runs the business alongside her mum and dad Susan and John, told the ECHO the whole family felt 'the time is right' to close now.

She said: "It was a hard decision to come to, because it was a decision that had to be made by the four of us altogether. We had to wait until all of us were in agreement."

Carly and her parents opened Maggie Mays on May 8, 1995, and she recalled: "We opened on VE day, and I'll never forget that first day. We got absolutely battered because it was a bank holiday, everyone was out in town, it was really really busy, we thought we were on to a winner."
