JANUARY CALL TO ADDRESS BLUES' LACK OF FIRE POWER

The former Liverpool player-turned pundit insisted he did not believe the Blues would go down but said the club's priority was for a first campaign in years in which there was no prospect of a survival fight.

The only way to do that, he said, was to find a player capable of finishing the chances that are being created for Everton’s two forwards, Beto and Thierno Barry.

Carragher was speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show, following Everton's 1-1 draw with Sunderland.

It was a game Everton dominated for the opening 30 minutes, taking the lead through Iliman Ndiaye and hitting the post through Jack Grealish.

The turning point in the game was, however, Barry's close range miss from a Grealish cross - which the Times suggested may have been the “miss of the season”.

That escape galvanised Sunderland and, David Moyes later accepted, hurt his side. The hosts grew into the game and dominated for the second half, though they could not find a winner after Granit Xhaka’s deflected equaliser.
