Bomb squad called to tip

SITE EVACUATED AFTER 'MORTAR BOMB' FOUND

A TIP was evacuated yesterday morning after workers found a potential mortar bomb on the sorting line.

The entrance to Bidston Recycling Centre was blocked off by Merseyside Police and the bomb squad was called after police received a report a mortar had been found.

Veolia, the company which runs the tip, said the discovery of a “suspicious item” led to the emergency services being called.

Several officers were at the scene as well as a Matrix van, which was inside the cordon.

Many workers have stayed on site. Wallasey Bridge Road remains open as normal.

A mortar bomb, often simply called a mortar round, is an explosive shell (projectile) fired from a mortar, a type of indirect-fire artillery weapon.
