HEARTACHE OF FAMILY AS WOMAN IS HANDED A SUSPENDED PRISON TERM

THE family of a man who was killed when a careless driver smashed into his vehicle have paid tribute to a “proud grandfather” and “cherished friend”.

The tributes to Michael Wilson came after the driver of the other car, Bethan Clarke, was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving.

The accident, just before 11am on December 4, 2023, happened when Clarke's Volkswagen Passat collided with the Honda Jazz being driven by Mr Wilson, 88, as she drove on the wrong side of the road.

A number of vehicles stopped, with people assisting and calling the emergency services.

An investigation by police would uncover footage that showed Clarke, who was injured in the collision, had been driving in the opposite direction to Mr Wilson, but had driven onto the wrong side of the road of Lutterworth Road, Gilmorton.

No other vehicles were involved.

Clarke was interviewed but the 35-year-old maintained she “could not fully recall” what had happened, police said.
