Letter of the day
Enoch Burke has had his bank account emptied by the Courts Service, Republic of Ireland, for accumulated unpaid fines due to non-compliance with legal directives issued to him since his suspension from his teaching post in a school in Westmeath.
This was for refusing to address a transitioning student in a classroom with their preferred pronouns.
The financial punishment itself is not directly an infringement on Enoch Burke's religious freedoms, but they are certainly consequential on his religious freedoms.
Let's just say firstly that the Enoch Burke case raises the question whether or not the Republic of Ireland should enshrine Christian values within its institutions, and especially its education system. Maybe that is a good idea.
