Poirot actor Sir David Suchet almost did not take the role of Agatha Christie's Belgian detective and said his brother advised him not to do it.

Sir David revealed he only started reading the Poirot books after accepting the role - a character he would portray on television screens to great acclaim for nearly 25 years.

Asked when he first read a Poirot novel, Suchet replied: “I may disappoint everybody - it was when I was offered the job.
