Jennifer Cartwright on Overcompensating
-
n Overcompensating you'll see actors in their early thirties playing characters over a decade younger than they are. Usually, when adults are cast as teenagers I find it frustrating as these dramas cement false expectations as to what growing up looks like. However, surprisingly, Overcompensating's casting choice works.
Overcompensating is an eight episode comedy drama loosely based on the life of comedian and actor Benito Skinner. Skinner plays Benny, a football star, valedictorian, and homecoming king, who is adapting to the difference between the small pond of high school and the big pond of college. Beneath a wannabe frat boy bravado, Benny is hiding a secret: he is gay. Yet, he's not the only one masking his true identity as in this TV world, everyone is overcompensating for something. Ensure calamity, chaos and cringe, as no one wants others to know who they really are.
