Woman killed and hubby seriously injured Man in 20s arrested over attack at house

- BY DAIRE FITTON

THE victims of a knife attack were named yesterday as a man arrested in connection with it remained in Garda custody.

The scene on the southside of Cork city was sealed off as the investigation continues into the violent incident on Monday night.

The couple have been named locally as Brian and Stella Gallagher, who had been living in the Shrewsbury Downs estate in Ballinlough for more than 20 years.

The pair were brought to Cork University Hospital, where Stella was pronounced dead and her husband remains in a serious but stable condition after receiving emergency treatment.

Residents have been left in a state of shock following the incident, and a postmortem is due to be carried out on the deceased, which will guide the course of the Garda investigation.

It's expected a formal murder probe will be launched in due course.

The man in his 20s, who is known to the couple, was arrested and detained at a Garda station in the Cork division.

Gardai have recovered a weapon from the scene, and the suspect can be held for up to 24 hours without charge under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
