Dazzling Perseids meteor event continues tonight

STARGAZERS are in for a treat as the Perseids meteor shower continues to reach its spectacular peak tonight.

The Royal Observatory in the UK confirmed that the event — dubbed the “most popular meteor shower” by NASA — began on July 17 and continues until August 24.

The displays have been building in intensity over recent nights and reached their most dazzling climax last night, continuing into tonight.

Irish observers should anticipate seeing meteors from sunset onwards. Jupiter and Venus will also make their closest approach to our planet today, offering viewers a chance to witness both celestial wonders.

NASA reports that this morning, both planets will sit approximately one degree apart and will gleam most brilliantly before dawn.
