Pop culture icon's life was as drama-filled as his bouts
HULK Hogan, the mustachioed megastar who took pro wrestling from smoke-filled arenas to the global stage of sports entertainment, has died at 71.
With his 24-inch biceps, golden moustache and slogan “Whatcha gonna do, brother?” Hogan was a towering figure in American pop culture, not just on the canvas but also in television, film, music and even the witness stand.
Police in Clearwater, Florida, said first responders went to Hogan's home yesterday after a report of a cardiac arrest.
They said he was treated before being transported to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Major Nate Burnside told reporters: “There were no signs of foul play or suspicious activity.”
Hogan's death came just five days after he was last seen online advertising beer.
Born Terry Gene Bollea, on August 11, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, he became synonymous with professional wrestling during the 1980s and early 1990s as Hulk Hogan.
At 6ft 7in and more than 21 stone, he was larger than life - a gladiator in neon who rallied millions to say their prayers and take their vitamins.
