Carney: Failure to feed forwards is costing Mayo

MARTIN CARNEY has lashed out at Mayo's style of play, saying he “might as well be trying to climb Everest in the nude" than waiting on a long delivery to Aidan O'Shea.

- BY PAT NOLAN

The former county star was on co-commentary duty for Mid West Radio for Mayo's shock defeat to Cavan on Sunday, during which he repeatedly decried a reluctance to vary the play and hit their target man on the edge of the square.

With Cavan leading by six points deep in injury time, Paul Towey fed O'Shea from deep and he won possession to score Mayo's only goal of the day, with Carney then declaring: “I might as well be blue in the face. I might as well be trying to climb Everest in the nude as trying to get a ball in there quickly.

“O'Shea, when he gets an early ball, what does he do? He puts the ball into the net.”
