POPE AND GLORY!

The Irish are everywhere in this city and some are infamous.

Irish immigrant Mrs O'Leary gained ignominy as the 19th century fire starter after her cow Daisy kicked a lantern over.

It set off a chain of events which saw the majority of the city's wooden houses torched in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

But Catherine O'Leary was falsely maligned because of anti-Irish feeling at the time; and was not exonerated until nearly 150 years later.

While poor innocent Mrs O'Leary's name was blackened, Alphonse Capone spawned a gangster tourist industry on his back and we see it in the merch stores and bars all over Chicago.
