Man who disarmed Bondi Beach attacker gets €1.4m in donations

- BY JEREMY ARMSTRONG

THE hero who tackled one of the Bondi Beach gunmen has received a €1.4million donation from well-wishers as he recovers in hospital.

Heartwarming footage captured the moment Ahmad al Ahmad, 43, learned 43,000 people around the world had donated money to honour his bravery.

The Syrian shopkeeper, who was shot several times in the shoulder and may lose his arm, was presented the cheque for AUS$2.5m at his bedside by a nurse.

Ahmad asked him "I deserve it?" and the nurse replies: "Every penny."

Asked if he had a message for his supporters, Ahmad said he wanted to "stand with each other, all human beings" and to "keep going to save lives".
