Derry's European success could come back and bite them in thrilling title race

THE most intriguing season in years is unfolding before us, yet there’s no class act among the four title contenders.

Derry's European success could come back and bite them in thrilling title race

That’s what makes it gripping. The title has been up for grabs all year, yet none of the contenders want to take ownership.

Before continuing, I want to congratulate Derry City for flying the flag in Europe. They have excelled where Shamrock Rovers, St Pat’s and Dundalk all failed.

I’ve heard it said that we should hold judgement on Europe until the dust settles, but that’s nonsense.

Results are results and we’ve had a very poor summer. End of story.

If we just accept that and let it slide, then the game here is going to struggle. You can’t stand still, not when similar smaller nations are improving at a rate of knots.

But Derry’s run in Europe could be a double-edged sword for them too, as they have another week at least to go.
