Ruling party won 22 of 28 bypolls in Punjab since 1995: ahead of voting in Ludhiana West, a look at the results over the years

In what could probably be a good sign for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, bypolls in the state have predominantly favoured the ruling party over the last 30 years.

As many as 22 of the 28 bypolls held since 1995 were won by the party in power, with the Opposition winning only six.Since the AAP came to power in Punjab in March 2022, seven bypolls have taken place so far, out of which the party has won five. The eighth bye-election is set to take place in Ludhiana West constituency on June 19, Thursday. This is also the most number of bypolls seen under a government's term in the last three decades.One more bypoll is likely to take place in Banga constituency where the SAD MLA had switched to the AAP in March last year. Earlier, seven bypolls were held between 2017 and 2022 during the Congress government's tenure, and before that five bypolls took place during the SAD-BJP government's term from 1997 to 2002.
