PROPOSALS for new links could bring together “severed” Anglesey communities but questions remain over whether it will ease the burden of “over-tourism”.

New link to bring 'severed' island villages together

While the visitor sector creates jobs and investment in the region some areas pay a heavy price due to its impact on the quality of life.

One of those places is Newborough on Anglesey which sits next to Traeth Llanddwyn and Newborough Forest.

It has always been popular but the rise of social media has seen the numbers descending explode, with traffic and littering a blight on the lives of villagers.

New Welsh Government funding for active travel changes has been mentioned as part of the solution with an extra £2.4 million for the Malltraeth to Newborough (phase 2) scheme.

This could potentially be followed by a further link between Llangefni and Newborough.

Here we look at what's planned:

Anglesey council said: “The design will connect Newborough with Malltraeth as currently there is severance between both communities with no safe walking and cycling links between the villages. This route will also provide connectivity to Llangefni and better active travel opportunities to Ysgol Santes Dwynwen with the wider area.

“The scheme also aims to improve the walking and cycling environment for residents and visitors in the area and to connect the community, green spaces and key tourism destinations of Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest to other locations on the route.”

The latest money is for phase two of the project and there are three elements to this.
