Netflix needed to recreate 'utterly alien' planet for show - so it chose Anglesey

WHEN Netflix was looking for an alien landscape to film a mind-bending episode in the latest series of Black Mirror, there was one stand-out candidate. And so it was that the cast and crew of USS Callister: Into Infinity headed to Anglesey.

Local viewers have noticed an uncanny similarity to a mountain that, in real life, appears too alien to be true. At Parys Mountain, Amlwch, all the Black Mirror producers had to do was to dial up the colours slightly.

But not by much: the former copper mine - once the world's largest - has a multi-hued landscape that's often been described as 'Martian' and likened to Arizona's Painted Desert.

The only surprise is why the bleakly beautiful site has not featured in more in the past. One eyebrow-raiser was the inclusion in the storyline of a Wrexham AFC supporter.
