Sikh gurus taught us to live for glory of land: PM

The Sikh gurus have taught Indians to live for the glory of their land and served as an inspiration to make the country better and developed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday as he led the nation in paying tributes to the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, who were bricked alive at the ages of nine and six in 1705.

Addressing a Veer Bal Diwas event in the national capital, Modi also said that India is coming out of the "mindset of slavery" and has full faith in its people, their abilities and heritage.

On Guru Gobind Singh's birth anniversary on January 9 last year, Modi had announced that December 26 will be observed as Veer Bal Diwas to commemorate the martyrdom of his sons Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh.

Recalling last year's celebrations, the PM said on Tuesday: "Veer Bal Diwas is a symbol of the never-say-die attitude for the protection of Bhartiyata (Indianness). This day reminds us that age doesn't matter when it comes to heights of bravery." He said the courage and ideals of Guru Gobind Singh ji and his four brave sons embolden every Indian even today.
