Cong won K'taka bypolls on money power, alleges BJP

The ruling Congress in Karnataka swept all three assembly constituencies that went to the bypolls, a verdict it hailed as affirmation of the state government's policies and welfare programmes, even as the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed disappointment over the results and accused the ruling party of relying heavily on financial resources to secure victories.

On Saturday, the Congress won the bypolls to Channapatna, Sandur and Shiggaon assembly seats, dealing a blow to the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) alliance. The bypoll results, though insignificant in terms of the stability of the Congress-led government in the southern state, had become a battle of prestige for the ruling party that came under tremendous pressure due to corruption allegations against its top leaders.
