Case cracked after victim's sister kept up lonely crusade

For several months, Delhi Police head constable Surender Singh Rana kept Monika Yadav's family convinced that she was alive, going to great lengths to keep the facade up. But her sister did not believe any of it.

From the day she "went missing", in September 2021, Yadav's sister fought a lonely battle that lasted two years and spanned five states. Vindicated but shaken at the revelations disclosed by police on Friday, that her sister had allegedly been killed by Rana, the woman-asking not to be named - shared details of her crusade.

First, she said, she got hold of her sister's Covid-19 vaccination details and found out that she allegedly got a vaccine at a Delhi hospital in December 2021. But that led her nowhere, and it later emerged that Rana faked the vaccination entry to create an alibi.

She then went through Yadav's bank account statement and found that it was still in use, with a host of transactions at ATMs.
