7 RG Kar doctors questioned over misuse of funds

Seven junior doctors who led the agitation against the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar medical college last year have been summoned by the Bidhan Nagar city police after allegations of diversion of funds collected for the movement was raised by a person who contributed to the cause, police said.

The protesters have refuted the corruption allegations and said all transactions were being audited. According to people aware of the matter, the cyber-crime branch of the Bidhan Nagar police launched a probe after receiving a complaint last year from one Raja Ghosh, a Kolkata resident, alleging he did not receive a receipt for the ₹5,000 he donated.

Although Ghosh sent a written complaint to police in October, the matter escalated on February 4 when a North 24 Parganas district court ordered an inquiry based on his petition. "The petitioner lodged court complaint in this regard," said the summon letter, a copy of which was seen by HT.

The doctors have been on strike since the assault and murder of the 31-year-old woman, a post graduate trainee doctor, on August 9, 2024.

HT reached out to officials from the Bidhan Nagar police commissionerate but they did not respond to queries seeking comments. "The police have to follow court orders," an official said, requesting anonymity.
