JAIPUR: Rajasthan high court on Wednesday issued a notice to the state government seeking a status report over detention of Indian Muslims during the ongoing drive by the state police against illegal Bangladeshi nationals.

The HC's order came in response to five petitions filed on Tuesday by the family members of five people, who are local residents of Rajasthan. One of the pleas was heard on Wednesday.

The counsel of the petitioners, Saadat Ali said: "A team from the Jamroli police station, on May 3, had suddenly launched a search operation as part of their ongoing drive against the illegal Bangladeshi nationals across the state. During the operation, the police detained at least 40 to 50 people from Bagrana area in Jaipur based on suspicion that they are Bangladeshi nationals. But they all are Indian Muslims and have been staying in Rajasthan for a long time. Though they were released after showing necessary documents a day after, the police again detained them on May 5 and sent them to the local detention centres saying that they need to verify their nationality thoroughly."
