NEONATAL SEPSIS IS A KEY BARRIER TO REDUCING NEWBORN DEATHS IN INDIA
NEW DELHI: A third of newborns admitted to special care units in Indian district hospitals suffer from sepsis, with most infections resistant to multiple drugs, according to research published on Wednesday.
The study in The Lancet Global Health journal found 34.6% of newborns in special newborn care units (SNCUs) across five district-level hospitals had sepsis, a potentially life-threatening infection. Between 75% and 88% of infections were caused by multidrug-resistant pathogens, making treatment particularly challenging.
