The city witnessed light to moderate rain on Sunday, with the monsoon trough currently hovering over Delhi, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which predicted increased rain activity in the coming days.
The Met department has also issued a yellow alert for Monday.
IMD said the trough was passing over Suratgarh, Sirsa, Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Daltonganj, Bankura, Digha and the Bay of Bengal. “Light to moderate showers are likely on Monday too. A yellow alert has been issued. We can expect some rain activity overnight too,” an IMD official said.
Safdarjung, base station for weather, logged 0.8mm rainfall between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Sunday. During the same period, Najafgarh logged 19mm, Mungeshpur 0.5mm, Rajghat 0.1mm, Palam “trace” and Lodhi Road 1.5mm, data showed.
Ashwary Tiwari, who runs the handle IndiaMetSky on X, said the trough is expected to hover around Delhi-NCR, giving good rains to northwest India from July 7 till July 14. “The monsoon axis is at lower levels over north India and there is a shear zone at the mid-levels in the atmosphere. Further, some moisture from a western disturbance dip is also expected to aide this activity,” he said.
