New Manipur Guv Visits 2 Districts Amid a Fresh Spate of Violence

Manipur's newly appointed governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, on Tuesday visited the tribal-dominated Churachandpur and the Meitei-majority Bishnupur, the two districts that are among the worst affected in the strife-torn state, and stressed the need to end animosity between different groups, according to an official statement.

Bhalla, the former Union home secretary, took the oath as the northeastern state's governor last Friday. During his visit to the two adjoining districts, he urged community leaders to work with the administration in peace-building efforts, the Raj Bhavan said.

"Governor of Manipur, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, on his maiden visit after assuming office, visited Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts today and interacted with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) residing in various relief camps and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering harmony in the region," the Raj Bhavan said, adding that he also inaugurated an IT centre at the Churachandpur College and interacted with students.
