PM to open J&K's Ganderbal tunnel tomorrow, security beefed up

Security arrangements have been beefed up around the Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district, ahead of the facility's inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13, officials said on Saturday.
SRINAGAR:
Modi is likely to address a public rally after the inauguration of the tunnel in Gagangir in Sonamarg area of the central Kashmir district, they said.
Security has also been strengthened in many areas of the Valley, including Srinagar city.
"Security has been tightened near the Z Morh tunnel. Multi-layered security arrangements have been put in place and the PM's security team, comprising special protection group (SPG) personnel, has taken over the venue," the officials said.
They said the venue is now off-limits to the public.
The opening of the 6.5-km Z Morh tunnel on Srinagar-Ladakh national highway (NH 1) will mark a significant milestone for the people.
The Srinagar-Ladakh highway, which has been closed for six months after completion of a longer tunnel, Zojila -- around 20 km from Z Morh, will allow all-weather travel on this strategic road. Besides the economic aspects, these tunnels hold geo-strategic importance, especially for the army's 14 Corps, based in Ladakh. The unit keeps vigil on the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Private sector can help address urban flooding
The torrential rains across India this monsoon once again exposed the deep vulnerabilities of its cities. Similar scenes of rain-wrought havoc played out across many cities, including metropolitan Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Urban centres that power India’s economy are now routinely drowning under their own weight — victims of poor planning and climate complacency. With climate-crisis-induced extreme rainfall events projected to surge by 43% by 2030, urban flooding is no longer an aberration — it's chronic crisis demanding urgent and systemic action. According to a 2025 World Bank report, India suffers average annual flood-related losses of nearly $4 billion, a figure expected to rise sharply as climate risks escalate and cities expand without adequate planning.
