Why language skills are key for career progress

English, as the lingua franca of business, has become a key enabler for professionals looking to grow in their careers.

Proficiency in English—both spoken and written—is highly valued across job roles and is a crucial component of one's overall soft skills. Given this context, organizations are rapidly prioritizing English proficiency testing during their hiring and L&D processes, and here tests such as the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) are becoming extremely relevant.

According to the India Skills Report 2024, 65% of India’s population is under 35 years old, but only 51.25% of them are employable due to the significant gap in soft skills, such as communication in English.

The report also emphasizes the rising significance of soft skills in hiring decisions. Employers today prioritize communication skills, particularly in English, as a key factor in evaluating candidates—especially for roles involving crossborder or multinational engagement.

With the growing demand for an Al-powered and global-ready workforce, English proficiency has become a critical enabler for career mobility.

Notably, proficiency in English goes beyond correct grammar and vocabulary; it is about clear and impactful communication that helps professionals make an impression and engage effectively with a varied group of stakeholders.

Where is everyone?

We've been searching for decades, but haven't found so much as a microbe in space yet. Could it be that we're early; that life simply has not evolved yet in the neighbourhood? Are we doing it all wrong? Is there a bustling universe of sentient beings out there, waiting for us to catch on? Humans are now beginning to build technology that could make the difference in our quest for alien life. We have a growing understanding of what to look for. We're getting better at sending probes to nearby planets, which could tell us more about where and how to search. What might we find? Why does it matter? Take a look

MF Husain: Man and myth, art and artist

M F Husain is undoubtedly India's best known and perhaps most highly regarded modern artist. As an editorial in this newspaper put it last week, he is \"arguably the most inventive artist of Indian modernism\". This is why it's not just sad but upsetting that an MF Husain museum will open next month in Doha and not in the country of his birth.
