India's electric mobility growth has gained accelerated momentum in 2025 with the entrance of two major global brands in the country's EV market, Tesla and VinFast, which launched their respective products here. Besides these auto OEMs, other players have also introduced their respective products into the space, further strengthening the Indian electric market

THE ELECTRIC ROAD: INDIA RACES INTO EV ERA

Over the last few years, electric vehicles have been gradually taking the front seat in the transition towards new mobility technologies.

Several auto companies have already announced their respective electric mobility strategy, keeping pace with the evolving consumer demand and government regulations around the world. In a country like India, where environmental pollution levels are soaring to new benchmarks and many major cities across the country are considered among the most polluted in the world, electric vehicles have been making noise, keeping pace with the question of the hour.

The year 2025 witnessed some spectacular action in the Indian electric vehicle market across different segments. However, the most important and benchmark-setting events were the launch of the Tesla Model Y and VinFast VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs. Besides that, several other carmakers in the country also introduced their respective products in the segment. The Indian electric vehicle market, however, is still being led by the electric two-wheelers. Keeping pace with the evolving market conditions, the number of players in this segment has grown significantly. So has the number of products in the space. Penetration of electric vehicles in the commercial vehicle segment, too, has grown significantly.

Electric cars: India's EV journey gains momentum with Tesla and VinFast

India's love story with electric vehicles took a new turn in 2025. The year 2025 witnessed the launch of two major electric passenger vehicle manufacturers in India - Tesla and VinFast, which have been shaping the global EV market for quite some time. After a lot of noise and drama, Tesla, the leading US electric car major that changed the EV game globally, finally set up its shop in India. However, the automaker didn't set up a local manufacturing plant, as it was speculated earlier. Instead, Tesla has decided to import the electric cars here as Completely Built Unit (CBU) models.
