Trump okayed key Russia sanctions bill, says US senator

Senator Lindsey Graham

(AFP)

US President Donald Trump will support a new Russia sanctions bill that could hike tariffs on goods and services from India and other countries that buy Russian oil to 500%, said US Senator Lindsey Graham on Wednesday.

The bill — known as the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025 — has acquired 84 cosponsors in the US Senate and could be put toa vote in the Senate as early as next week.

Indian goods exports to the United States grew to roughly $7 billion in November, a 22% increase over the previous year despite tariffs being raised to 50% by Trump in August over purchases of Russian oil.

However, experts said, 500% tariff on Indian goods and services would effectively shut down Indian exports to the US.
