SC Defers Hearing on Bengal Plea to Include 77 OBCs

The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred hearing till July on a plea by the West Bengal government to include 77 communities, mostly Muslims, as backward classes in its state awaiting a fresh exercise being undertaken by the state backward commission for identification of other backward class (OBC) communities.
NEW DELHI:
The state approached the top court against a May 22, 2024 order of the Calcutta high court, which struck down the inclusion of these communities, alleging that it was done on religious grounds for political gains.
