The 2004 Burail jailbreak by four inmates, including assassins of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, by digging a 109-ft tunnel made national headlines. On the night of January 21, 2004, the four undertrials, including Beant Singh assassins Babbar Khalsa International chief Jagtar Singh Hawara, BKI India head Paramjeet Singh Bheora and their accomplice Jagtar Singh Tara, along with their cook Devi Singh, a murder accused, escaped from barrack number 7 by digging a tunnel. Hawara was rearrested in 2005 for his involvement in twin blasts in Delhi, while Bheora was rearrested by Delhi Police in 2006.
