Scots football legend Sir Alex Ferguson has given a powerful endorsement to the Labour candidate in the Holyrood by-election for Hamilton, Larkhall & Stonehouse.

The former Manchester Utd and Aberdeen manager said Davy Russell is a “man of integrity” who he is “proud” to support.

Russell is going head-to-head against the SNP’s Katy Loudon on June 5.

Pundits believe the battle is a crucial test of opinion in the run up to next year’s Scottish Parliament election.

Sir Alex, a Labour supporter who makes occasional forays into politics, has thrown his weight behind Russell at a key point in the campaign.

In a statement to the Daily Record, he said: “I've known Davy Russell for years, and I can say without hesitation that he's a man of integrity, determination, and deep commitment to his community.

“He’s from here, he understands the people, and he never forgets where he comes from. Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse need someone who'll fight their corner — and Davy is that person.

“I'm proud to support him and know he'll work tirelessly for the place he calls home.”
