UDF seeks end to stray dog menace after rabies deaths

Kerala’s opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has slammed health authorities for a series of fatalities from rabies, while doctors blamed delayed intervention for the deaths.

Twelve people, including three children, have died after dog bites in the southern state in the past two months, with strays multiplying after the sterilisation drive stopped.

On Monday, an eight-year-old child, Niya Faisal, died at the state-run referral hospital in the city from a dog bite after taking three doses of the vaccine.

"It is very serious that a child who received three doses of the vaccine contracted rabies," said VD Satheesan, the leader of the opposition and the UDF's chairman.
