Monsoon sets in over Kerala, wreaks havoc across the state

The southwest monsoon, vital to India’s economy and lifeline to its farmers, has set in over Kerala a week ahead of its usual date, the weathermen announced on Saturday.
The Indian Mat authorities said it has further advanced into Mahe, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, the Maldives and the Comorin area, and Mizoram.
"Thus, the southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala today against the usual date of June I," the Indian Meteorological Department said in a press release.
"This is the earliest date of monsoon onset over Kerala after the year 2009, when it was set in over Kerala on May 23."
