3 more die in Kerala wild elephant attacks

In a tragic continuation of humanwildlife conflict in the forest fringes of Thrissur district in Kerala, three more tribespeople have lost their lives in a wild elephant attack near the touristy Athirappilly waterfalls.

Two people were killed overnight on Monday at Vanchikkadavu within the Vazhachal forest division, marking the third fatal encounter with elephants in the area within 24 hours.

The victims, identified as Satheesh and Ambika, both members of the Sasthampooam tribal hamlet, were foraging for wild honey. This seasonal practice has been part of their cultural heritage for generations.

When the attack occurred, they were accompanied by two relatives, highlighting the communal nature of their foraging activities, who escaped with mild injuries. Forest officials said they typically stay in temporary shelters in the forest for days to gather forest products.
