POWER company VPI has taken a step closer to decarbonising the Humber’s heavy industry with having secured its first environmental permit for major carbon capture plans.
The firm's Immingham Combined Heat and Power Plant - one of the largest in Europe - will use Shell’s Cansolv capture system following approval be the Environment Agency.
VPI also has planning permission from North Lincolnshire Council to retrofit the system at the site in a move it says will be far cheaper than building a new decarbonised plant from scratch.
The firm, which is behind electricity and steam generation for the Humber's two large oil refineries, says its plans are for carbon capture up to 3.3 million tonnes annually.
