South Africa faces a looming economic crisis following President Donald Trump's recent declaration that any nation doing business with Iran will be hit with a 25% tariff on exports to the United States. This "final and conclusive" directive, issued via Truth Social, threatens to force Pretoria into a high-stakes diplomatic and economic corner.

As a member of the Brics bloc, South Africa maintains various trade and diplomatic ties with Tehran.

While Iran's primary exports - largely oil - flow heavily to China and India, South Africa's burgeoning trade relationship with the US is now under direct threat.

The US is one of South Africa's largest trading partners, particularly under Agoa, which allows duty-free access for thousands of South African products.
