SCENIC MOUNTAIN PASSES IN THE SOUTHERN CAPE

Those who like to take a day drive have lots to choose from, not the least of which are the scenic mountain passes in the Southern Cape.

From Van Wyksdorp in the west to the Tsitsikamma and Phantom passes in the east, covering the Langkloof and Little Karoo to the north, the options include tarred and gravel roads, majestic arid poorts and lush fynbos-covered mountains. Many of them are historic passes that were built in the 1800s or early 1900s. Take your pick!

Cloete's Pass:

With breathtaking views, this 19km-long gravel road crosses the Vreysrant Mountains between Herbertsdale and Van Wyksdorp. Pack your picnic basket and your camera.

Seweweekspoort:

With its dramatic rock formations and diverse flora, the 17km gravel road reminds one of Meiringspoort. It winds through the Swartberg Mountains, crossing the Huis River 23 times. A sturdy vehicle is recommended.
