A SYMBOLIC MOVE ON SC GROUPS

Telangana has become the first state in India to implement the sub-categorisation of Scheduled Castes (SCs), a long-debated issue aimed at ensuring a more equitable distribution of benefits among SC communities. The timing — coinciding with Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary —lends symbolic and political weight to the decision.

The move seeks to address an uncomfortable truth: a few dominant sub-castes have disproportionately availed the benefits of reservation, leaving many other marginalised groups behind. By dividing 59 sub-castes into three categories—Group I, Group II and Group III-providing

for different percentages of reservation in education and employment, Telangana hopes to correct a historical imbalance.
