Australia's EV market has reached an important milestone; 9% of new car sales so far in 2025 are now EVs according to data from the Automobile Association of Australia (AAA).

- Sanjesh Pinnapola

The equivalent figure in 2022 was just 1%, underscoring both the momentum and how far the local market still has to go. But globally, it is not the traditional stalwarts but Chinese brands like BYD, Geely, and Xpeng that now set the pace.

China has seen the balance tip decisively. Domestic brands accounted for 69% of sales in the first half of 2025 according to China's Association of Automobile Manufacturers, when they held just a third's share in 2020. Estimates also point to EVs being likely to account for 60% of sales in 2025.
