Scientific study needed: Delhi govt urges SC to review order

|July 27, 2025
THE ROAD WORTHINESS of a vehicle is a technical and scientific issue that must be linked to actual emissions, the Delhi government has highlighted in an application filed before the Supreme Court as it urged the top court to review its 2018 order on the blanket ban on overage vehicles across the National Capital Region (NCR).
In its application, it also sought directions to the Commission on Air Quality Management (CAQM) "to carry out a suitable broad-based study" and analyse if there is a need for the continuation of such a ban.
A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai will hear the matter on Monday. After the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had banned petrol vehicles older than 15 years, and diesel vehicles older than 10 years from plying in NCR in 2015, the Supreme Court had upheld the ban in an order dated October 28, 2018.
