PRESIDENT IN SURPRISE VISIT TO KYIV | We'll back you for as long as it takes, Biden tells Ukraine on surprise visit
JOE BIDEN made a surprise visit to Ukraine today ahead of the first anniversary of Vladimir Putin's invasion and declared: "One year later, Kyiv stands. And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands."
The US president met Volodymyr Zelensky, inset, in Kyiv and told him that America would back Ukraine in the war for "as long as it takes". He added: "Putin's war of conquest is failing." Just under a year ago, Putin deployed some of his most highly-trained troops to seize the Ukrainian capital in a lightning strike. But the Russian invasion floundered in the face of fierce Ukrainian resistance and repeated blunders by Putin’s army, including on military tactics and lack of basic supplies for its troops.
