Biden: Israel-Hamas ceasefire possible by end of weekend
Evening Standard
|February 27, 2024
US PRESIDENT Joe Biden said a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is close and hoped to see one materialise by “the end of the weekend”.
The comments came when Mr Biden made an impromptu stop at an ice cream parlour in New York after he had wrapped up an interview with chat show host Seth Meyers.
Asked by a reporter when he expected a ceasefire to begin, the 81-year-old, with an ice cream cone in hand, said he hoped it could start within days.
“Well I hope by the beginning of the weekend, I mean the end of the weekend,” he said. “My national security adviser tells me that we’re close. We’re close. We’re not done yet. My hope is by next Monday we’ll have a ceasefire.”
