TRIAL TO ASSESS GOVERNMENT'S 'IMMINENT THREAT WARNING'

- By SAM DIMMER

IN September, millions of Brits will receive an emergency alert on their mobile phones as part of a nationwide test run by the government.

The objective is to assess the Government's Emergency Alert system, first launched in 2023, which is used to warn the public about imminent life-threatening situations, including severe weather events.

During this trial, mobile phones will vibrate and make a loud siren noise for about ten seconds, even if they are on silent mode.

A message will also appear on phone screens, explaining that the alert is just a test. Since its establishment, the system has been activated during emergencies such as Storm Darragh in December 2024, when over three million people were urged to stay indoors due to 90mph winds, sadly leading to two deaths.
