A mini-paradise reclaimed from the waves

SAMPHIRE Hoe in the summer has an almost fairytale quality - a far-off land of striking cliffs, a meandering river, grassy hillocks, and a beach sloping down to the crystal-clear sea.

A mini-paradise reclaimed from the waves

Visitors have dubbed the spot a “hidden gem” after falling in love with the dramatic yet peaceful atmosphere and spectacular panoramic views.

And when you make your way through the tunnel to the nature reserve at the foot of the White Cliffs, it more than lives up to its distant promise - with footpaths and a cycle route linking up the beach, tea kiosk, and cafe with the cheap car park.

It's also a great spot for rock pooling and a haven for wildlife. You may see kestrels, house martins, and peregrine falcons flying above as you walk past rare and beautiful wildflowers.

Depending on what time of year you visit, look out for the dazzling purple of rock sea lavender or common spotted orchids, dragonflies buzzing over the water, lizards sunbathing on the rocks, and harbour porpoise and seals off the coast as you gaze across the sea to France.

With the recent hot weather and sunshine, Samphire Hoe has come into its own as a mini-paradise perfect for a relaxed walk.

If you want a one mile walk, there are two routes you can take one follows a smooth concrete sea wall, and the other passes through the reserve with good paths and steep gradients while the North Downs Way runs along the clifftop on its way to Dover.

There is also the Spindrift Café on site - but make sure to check they're open before you set off.
