Mini orchards can offer blossom, shade, scents and a harvest, and it's so easy to get things started

- DAVID DOMONEY

Small spaces can bear fruit

AN orchard doesn’t have to be a field of trees.

AN orchard doesn’t have to be a field of trees. Sometimes it starts with one apple in a pot, a fan-trained cherry against a wall, or a pear by a sunny fence. With the right varieties and rootstocks, you can bring the feeling of an orchard into a small space.

Late spring into early summer is a good time to think about fruit. Young fruits may be forming, container-grown trees can still be planted with regular watering, and you can plan bare-root fruit trees for the dormant season, from late autumn to early spring.
