1492: The Spanish army recaptured Granada from the Moors, meaning the entire Iberian peninsula was controlled by Christian rulers.

1757: Clive of India captured Calcutta after it had been seized by the Nawab of Bengal. The latter is infamous in the UK for imprisoning 146 British prisoners in the notorious “Black Hole of Calcutta” - a tiny prison cell. After a night of suffocation and heat exhaustion, only 23 survived.
1932: The Japanese set up the republic
